Located only a short commute from the renowned Research Triangle Park and home to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, it’s no surprise that our Tar Heel town scored a spot on Top Value Reviews’ list of the 20 Smartest Small Towns in America.
Chapel Hill’s well-educated population secured sixth place on the consumer advocate research site’s list ahead of well-recognized “smart” cities like:
– Cupertino, Calif., home to Apple’s headquarters and other tech companies;
– Lexington, Mass., a suburb near MIT and Harvard;
– McLean, Va., a Washington, D.C. suburb; and
– Princeton, N.J., known for its namesake university.
Top Value Reviews touted the high percentage of the town’s population with a secondary degree and recognized the university’s health and medical studies programs for retaining talent. According to the article:
Of Chapel Hill, North Carolina’s 57,000 residents, 95% earned at least a high school diploma, while an amazing 76% went on to acquire a bachelor’s degree. Part of this is thanks to the fact that the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill calls Chapel Hill home. UNC has a great reputation when it comes to health and medical studies, and a state-owned system of hospitals that tie into the university’s school of medicine is a major employer of the town’s non-student residents. As if that weren’t impressive enough, Chapel Hill is also a third of the “Research Triangle” that includes Duke University and North Carolina State University.
