SAS, the world’s largest privately held software company, has taken the No. 2 spot on the latest “Best Place to Work in the U.S.” list, as ranked by Fortune magazine. Google tops the list. SAS, which makes its home on a sprawling “campus” in Cary, has nearly 14,000 workers globally, about 5,200 of which are based in Cary. The campus is home to many amenities aimed at improving the quality of life and lowering the stress of its workers, things ranging from onsite health clinics to workout facilities to childcare. The company has a very low employee turnover rate of some 3 percent a year vs. an industry average of 15 percent. The 38-year-old company which is still led by Chief Executive Officer Jim Goodnight, has made the list each year since Fortune launched the program and has cracked the Fortune top 10 on 11 occasions.
